http://www.fujifilm.co.jp/history/dai3-06.html

LOOKING
BACK:Touchdown! 42 Years In the Motion Picture Industry
by
Kenneth R. Davey

It all started in Winnipeg at the peak of the
worst depression of the century, in 1932. There were no jobs, no
unemployment insurance, no welfare to speak of, no training or
technical facilities, no place to apprentice. Motion pictures were
a fairly new business and we were far west of Toronto, out in the
colonies so to speak, and therefore at a great
disadvantage.
After graduating from high school with only
some experience as manager of my high school yearbook in 1932-33,
and no possibility of university, I was able to get a job with the
Hudson?s Bay store. There I got a chance to work in sales in the
newly- formed Photographic Department at $4 a week in a six-day
week from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day. In 1935-36, I was made head
of the department (a staff of three) and I received $6 a week, no
overtime. You had to learn, fast?cameras, film processing, a host
of other products and services?but then nobody else knew too much
either.
Most interesting to me was the
fairly new non-flammable 16mm film that Kodak was producing,
compared to the flammable 35mm film used in the movie business.
The 35mm cellulose-based stock was the cause of many fires, due in
part to the arc light sources necessary for theatre projection.
The safety panchromatic reversal black & white 16mm film made
it possible for the amateur to get involved?and they did. The 16mm
format was made to compete with and eventually replace the 9.5mm
European size, with its single, between-frames sprocket.
The 16mm American size gave a larger picture area, with
sprockets on both edges (until sound came) for a steadier
image.
These were the days of silent footage and titles.
Sound was just arriving in the theatres. We
demonstrated and sold titlers of all sorts, from ones with adapter
lenses for closeups and those for use with typewritten copy, to
larger ones with loose fonts or hand-lettered cards. There was no
through-the-lens viewing, so a lot of trial and error was the only
way to learn. This introduced me to my really first film
production job. It became my job in the photo department to
take customers? film, cut out the bad parts, rearrange if
required, splice in titles, etc., then teach the customers how to
do it. I later found out that I had become some kind of
editor.
