What War Means
My Eighty Years In China に掲載されている YMCA Men's Club のメンバーだった中国人 Sarcy Chen
What War Means (the book compiled by
Nanking,
October 20, 1939 Dear Mr. Fitch, ... The relief work in the
former capital has been carried on quite successfully, as I am sure you
know from the reports we sent you since you left. The Japanese
arrested our innocent people without reason, and we stayed in Nanking
risking our lives, simply because the work had to be done. On the night
of December 7, 1938, Japanese gendarmes and police of the "reformed
government" mobilized, as if for a great battle, to arrest seven helpers
of the Committee for the whole night. I was one of them. As a principal
of the victims, I was tried five times on question came from; any
